Ships to switch to clean energy

Questions have been raised about how Barbados will be impacted by efforts to decarbonise the shipping industry. The International Maritime Organisation has set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping by or around 2050. The considerations include the possibility of introducing a universal price for emissions and whether there should be a phased-in approach for ships to switch to green energy. Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill, Professor Troy Lorde, says the move could have implications for shipping costs and even the country's cruise sector. With plans to introduce a ferry service between Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, Professor Lorde says decarbonisation could also impact this venture.
