TPP Pledges Plymouth Waterfront Recovery and Coastal Defense on Campaign Trail
5 hours ago
On the campaign trail ahead of the January 12, 2026 elections, the Tobago People’s Party (TPP) addressed supporters in Plymouth last Monday, unveiling significant plans for waterfront revitalization and infrastructure resilience. Speaking at a political meeting near the historic Courlander’s Monument, Political Leader Farley Augustine announced that the administration has taken decisive steps to reclaim key coastal lands for public use.
The party leadership confirmed that expired private leases for lands surrounding the Plymouth jetty, the monument, and the old post office will not be renewed. This decision is designed to return control to the Tobago House of Assembly, allowing for the development of a proper landing site and guaranteed land frontage for the local fishing community. Augustine emphasized that this move corrects historical lease arrangements that restricted public access to the bay.
Addressing urgent environmental concerns, the TPP highlighted the severe coastal erosion impacting the area west of the playing field and near the Fort. Augustine noted that previous retaining structures were insufficient to hold back the sea. To rectify this, it was announced that a loan facility through the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) has been activated after prior delays. With engineering assessments complete, construction of new sea defense systems behind the basketball court is projected to begin this fiscal year.
The announcements position infrastructure development and the protection of indigenous rights as central themes of the TPP’s platform as the election date approaches.
