Farley Handout Government Must End
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, addressing a political meeting in Lambeau, declared that the current economic reliance on the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is unsustainable. Augustine highlighted the dangerous reality where the THA employs the vast majority of the population, warning that this model cannot persist in the long term.
He urged for the active development of alternative industries to ensure citizens can generate income independent of state resources. Augustine cautioned that if the THA were to stop spending, the island’s economy would face total collapse, specifically pointing to caterers, contractors, and the transportation sector as examples of businesses almost entirely dependent on the Assembly.
He asserted that no reputable economist would support this « handout government » approach and called for a decisive shift toward a self-sufficient Tobago where survival is not tethered to government spending.
