Wasp Stings Opposition: $900M Debt & No ‘Penny’ for Tobago
In a fiery address at a Tobago People’s Party (TPP) meeting in Lambeau, Wane « Wasp » Clarke launched a scathing attack on the opposition ahead of the January 12 THA elections. Clarke did not mince words as he dismantled the opposition’s track record, specifically highlighting a staggering $900 million debt inherited by the current administration. He accused the very individuals responsible for incurring this debt of now hypocritically criticizing the current government’s procurement practices.
Clarke alleged that in the lead-up to the last election, the previous administration recklessly handed out employment letters—telling people to « gwan take a wok »—knowing fully well the financial instability they were creating. He framed the upcoming election as a choice between transparent governance and the return of fiscal irresponsibility.
The Lambeau/Lowlands representative also took aim at the opposition’s leadership, delivering a sharp double entendre regarding « Penny, » a reference to the PNM’s political leader, Pennelope Beckles. Clarke declared that Tobago is finished with « Penny » and demands « big dollars » for development, rejecting what he described as insufficient leadership and funding from the central government. He argued that the « Tobago First » narrative pushed by the opposition is a convenience used only when Tobago’s seats are needed to secure a parliamentary majority.
In a plea for honest leadership, Clarke promised to be straightforward with his constituents. Drawing a parallel to divine answers, he stated he would not hide from requests but would honestly say « not now » if resources were unavailable, rather than making empty promises to « duck and weave » later.
As the January 12 date approaches, Clarke’s message was clear: Tobago must reject the « debt collectors » of the past and demand the respect and resources it is owed.
