Where Did The $13B Go?
Jada Charles of the PNM Tobago East Youth League delivered a scathing critique of the Tobago People’s Party (TPP) administration during a political meeting in Mount Grace. Charles urged the electorate not to « reward inaction, » questioning how an administration that allegedly accomplished little in four years could be trusted with another term.
Focusing on financial accountability, Charles highlighted that despite $13 billion being spent over the last term, there is a distinct lack of visible progress. She specifically pointed to the Scarborough/Mt. Grace district, noting that despite its representative receiving the highest development allocation, the area suffers from a lack of infrastructure. She characterized the administration’s legacy as merely « breaking down a bus shed » to rebuild it, rather than delivering substantial development.
The youth leader also raised concerns regarding transparency, referencing a 2022 press conference where claims of corruption were made, yet no audit reports have surfaced three years later. Charles argued that the current leadership has remained silent on critical issues affecting citizens, including economic hardships and increased fines.
In contrast, Charles presented the People’s National Movement’s vision for the island, which includes a « Next Gen » deal for young people. This plan promises the creation of 7,000 new jobs, paid apprenticeship programs in sectors like renewable energy and agriculture, and the implementation of the University of Tobago. She concluded by appealing to the community to prioritize tangible development and youth-focused governance.
