PNM vs TPP:PDP First Term Track Records

Former Senator Laurence Hislop has issued a stinging rebuke to the current administration, challenging the narrative that the People’s National Movement (PNM) failed to deliver during its initial years in office. Speaking at a political meeting in the Mason Hall/Moriah electoral district ahead of the January 12th elections, Hislop directly responded to statements made earlier in the week by Zoresha Hackett. Hackett had allegedly cited the PNM’s early record to justify the current administration’s failure to accomplish major campaign goals after four years.

Hislop dismantled this comparison by highlighting specific developmental achievements within the Mason Hall and Moriah communities during the PNM’s first term (2001–2005). Contradicting claims that key infrastructure dated back « eons, » he reminded the audience that the Orville London-led administration built the Mason Hall Government Primary School from scratch after the old structure was condemned. He further listed the construction of the Mason Hall Secondary School, the Punch Bowl Road connecting Sandy River to Alma Road, and the Mason Hall-Les Coteaux Road as undeniable proof of the party’s early delivery in the district.

The former Senator then turned to the deterioration of public transport, specifically affecting the far east countryside villages. He lamented that only a single bus currently services the route between Charlotteville and L’Anse Fourmi. Hislop directed a personal appeal to the Chief Secretary, urging him to show greater compassion for the residents of these rural areas. He argued that the Chief Secretary, who resides in the affected area and relied on the bus service himself in the past, should intimately understand the struggle of commuters. Hislop criticized the prioritization of air-conditioned bus sheds over maintaining an operational fleet, questioning the utility of such facilities when the bus service itself has collapsed.
