Tobago People’s Party (TPP) Political Leader Farley Augustine has unveiled an ambitious four-year roadmap to professionalize sports on the island, promising substantial monthly salaries for local cricketers and footballers. Speaking on the campaign trail, Augustine outlined a vision where athletes in proposed semi-professional leagues would earn between $10,000 and $12,000 per month.
The Political Leader detailed a strategic timeline to establish both a semi-professional cricket league and a semi-professional football league by the end of the next four-year term. He emphasized that the initiative would strictly prioritize youth development, nurturing talent from primary and secondary schools through to adulthood, rather than relying on athletes who have already passed their prime.
To support this transition, Augustine announced significant infrastructure upgrades. He revealed that the renovation of a gym at Shaw Park is nearing completion and will serve as a high-quality public facility accessible to all athletes. Additionally, he pledged to construct community-based gyms, starting with a facility at the Melva Joe playing field in Whim, to ensure athletes have accessible, high-standard training grounds closer to home.
Financial backing for these initiatives would come from a bolstered Sport Development Fund. Augustine criticized the current allocations within the Lalonde Gordon Fund as insufficient, committing to investing no less than $5 million annually to ensure athletes receive adequate support.
