James 1Benefits from Gimmicks

Trevor James has issued a stern warning to the electorate regarding what he terms the « election gimmick, » urging Tobagonians not to be swayed by temporary handouts from the opposition. Speaking at a Tobago People’s Party (TPP) meeting ahead of Monday’s Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election, James described a cycle of exploitation where political operatives target vulnerable communities with petty cash and alcohol to secure votes.
James detailed the strategy, alleging that agents approach « men on the block » in areas like Port of Spain, Point Fortin, and Arima with offers of « $40 or $50 » or money to « buy some weed » and « puncheon ». He argued that these inducements are designed to make voters « feel nice for a month and a half, » creating a false sense of care during the campaign season.
However, James warned that once the election is over, the reality is starkly different. He asserted that « everything goes for the 1% and the cabal, » leaving the ordinary citizens who sold their support waiting empty-handed for the next election cycle.
Directing his message specifically to the residents of Calder Hall, Scarborough/Mount Grace, and Daryl Spring, James did not mince words about the opposition’s intent. He characterized them as « lying, thieving, and Tobago hating, » urging the population to reject these superficial gestures and vote for long-term representation rather than short-term gain.
