Today would have been his birthday. The Story of my friend Diego, a Journalist Silenced in Haiti
This deeply personal story was originally told at a storytelling event organized by The Moth at the Huntington Theatre, where Emmanuel Paul shared the profound and heartbreaking journey of his friend Diego Charles.
Paul had mentored Diego, helping him become a journalist in Haiti—a profession that would ultimately cost Diego his life.
The narrative explores the complex emotions of loss, guilt, and the haunting question that lingers: « What could I have done to save him? » Through this tribute to an « unforgettable brother, » Paul examines not only Diego’s assassination but also the dangerous reality faced by journalists in Haiti, the weight of survivor’s guilt, and the bond between mentor and student that transcends death.
