“A decades-long joke of an investigation.”
That’s how Attorney General John Jeremie described the probe into the collapse of CL Financial as he laid the Commission of Inquiry Report in the Lower House on Friday.
« Whether to continue this decades-long joke of an investigation, because that is what it was. Spending money on lawyers, billions of dollars on lawyers. »
The AG revealed that the long-awaited Commission of Inquiry report into the collapse of CLICO, completed in 2016, had never been laid in Parliament.
« To date, however, somewhere in the vicinity of about three to four billion dollars, over and above that $28 billion, have been spent on matters relating to the collapse of Clico. But you know how many people have been charged? Not one single person. None. »
He mentioned, though, that as Attorney General, careful decisions have to be made.
« I have to be careful. We are also not able to bring an end to any criminal investigation. That is a matter which is entirely the remit of the Director of Public Prosecutions. »
The Attorney General said he will now move to end the costly civil proceedings tied to the matter, noting that it was a waste of public funds.
He insisted that he consulted the relevant authorities before bringing the report to Parliament.
« I had a conversation with the Director of Public Prosecutions not once but twice. I had a conversation with the Governor of the Central Bank, not once but thrice. And is there anybody else you wanted me to speak with? Because I have done my job. »
