A Bon Accord, Tobago, family is grateful for the swift work of veterinarian Dr. Paul Crooks in saving the life of their family pet, Rex, after he was shot and injured during a State of Emergency police operation in Tobago on Thursday.

Senior Superintendent Rodhill Kirk spoke with TTT News on the matter.

« The police were on an operation in a known drug-block area, and upon pursuing a suspect, one of the officers was approached by a dog, and he became fearful for his safety, and he discharged a round, striking the dog. Investigations are continuing in respect to that. »

In an update on social media, Rex’s owner, Dave Elliott, noted that officers were conducting a raid on the house next door when one of the occupants allegedly threw a bag over a tall galvanised fence separating the properties, prompting officers to access the family home where the incident occurred.

He said the Head of the Criminal Investigations Department and the officer who shot the dog visited the home and apologised to the family.
