The Couva Children’s Hospital is gradually expanding its services, months after being rededicated by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Minister of Health Dr Lackram Bodoe said the phased roll-out is already helping to address long surgical waiting lists and improve access to specialised care for children.
Danielle John reports.
Minister Bodoe said that when the government took office last year, it discovered significant amounts of unused and non-functional medical equipment at the Couva Children’s Hospital.
Despite those challenges, the Minister said work has been ongoing to repair and recommission the equipment while gradually activating services at the hospital.
Dr Bodoe shared that 361 children have already received services at the paediatric specialist outpatient clinics.
The Minister said plans are also underway to introduce additional services at the facility.
Dr Lackram Bodoe was speaking at a United National Congress media briefing on Sunday.
