Government Promotes Work-And-Study Model For Tertiary Level Students

Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, Professor Prakash Persad, says his Ministry’s approach to tertiary education is evolving.
Minister Persad highlighted the change in the approach to tertiary level education, explaining that students are being encouraged to work and study.
« This is what micro-credential does. It focuses on the student, the student’s ability, the student’s time and then the needs of the industry so that the students can get work. There is a change in the whole system of how we educate. So there are going to be changes, and it’s happening worldwide. »
Professor Persad said he intends to look for more industry partners to work with academic institutions.
Minister Persad made his remarks at a ceremony for the North Central Regional Health Authority, Caribbean Dockyard, and Engineering Services Limited to sign MOUs with YTEPP Limited to provide training and certification for youths at both institutions.
« Mr. Alexander told me that at Caribbean Dockyard you actually do the teaching, but the certification is being done by YTEPP. And there is no reason why we can’t do that more and more, that the university becomes an equal partner with industry or conversely, industry becomes an equal partner with the university, the tertiary level institutions, to produce students. »
