An explosion in Chaguanas has led to a major fire that gutted parts of Mitsuda Superstore Limited in Chaguanas.
According to Chief Fire Officer Andy Hutchinson, the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service received a report of the incident at approximately 12:33pm, prompting an immediate response.
« Approximately 35 fire officers on scene right now. We have been experiencing a lot of water shortage at the scene, low water pressure. It’s been giving us a lot of problems to contain and extinguish the fire. Officers, at presently, have the situation under control but not extinguished. »
Chief Fire Officer Hutchinson confirmed that four nearby homes were affected, with damage including shattered windows and broken doors.
Although the explosion would have been significant, no casualties were reported, and all employees were accounted for.
« No reports of injuries. We don’t have a calculation yet for losses. No injuries from the business itself. No injuries from the houses and surrounding area. »
The Chief Fire Officer called on the public to practise more caution to avoid instances such as these.
« At this point the most I can say is that the Fire Service, it is known that we have limited resources. We are attempting to do the best that we can with the limited resources we have. What the public needs to do is assist us. By doing their housekeeping in a way that prevents this type of response. Whether it’s a commercial premises, industrial premises, or domestic. Please don’t allow us or give us a cause to respond. »
