Trinidad and Tobago swimmer Liam Carrington has secured a spot in the men’s 100-metre backstroke final at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania.

The 17-year-old, who trains in the United States, continued his record-breaking form on Tuesday.

After erasing his own Boys’ 15–17 national mark in the morning preliminaries with a 55.04-second swim, bettering his previous 55.32 from the CARIFTA championship in April, Carrington went even faster in the semi-finals. Competing in the first of two races, he touched the wall in 54.54 seconds, lowering the national record yet again.

That time placed him fourth in his semi-final and seventh overall among the qualifiers, comfortably booking his place in the medal race.

Carrington will line up in lane one when the final splashes off on Wednesday at 11:02am Trinidad and Tobago time.
