Concern Grows After Dolphins Found Mutilated In Maracas

Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ravi Ratiram, says tougher fisheries legislation is required, following the discovery of two dead dolphins in Maracas.

The dolphins were found washed ashore with their tail fins severed and deep slash wounds to their stomachs.

Speaking to TTT News, the Minister said while the exact circumstances remain unclear, fisherfolk have suggested that the dolphins may have become entangled in fishing nets.

The discovery of two severely cut and dead dolphins along Maracas Beach has sparked concern over the safety and protection of marine life in Trinidad and Tobago.

Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ravi Ratiram, confirmed that the Ministry is aware of the incident and described the images as deeply troubling.

While investigations continue, the Minister said efforts are already underway to educate fisherfolk on safer and more responsible fishing practices to reduce harm to marine species.

Minister Ratiram also noted that reforming outdated legislation forms a critical part of the Ministry’s response.

The Minister was speaking during Easter celebrations hosted by the Ministry at the Queen’s Park Savannah on Saturday.
