Trinidad and Tobago’s CARIFTA track and field team is home, and the government is calling its performance in Grenada nothing short of historic.

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Phillip Watts welcomed the athletes back on Tuesday afternoon, saying the team returned with 35 medals.

The Minister called it the country’s best CARIFTA showing since 2010 and possibly the third-best performance in the Games’ history.

« To return home with a total of 35 medals, nine golds, 11 silvers, and 15 bronze, and to place second on the medal table is an extraordinary accomplishment. This is our best CARIFTA performance since 2010, and perhaps our third best performance ever at the Games. »

The Minister credited not just talent, but sacrifice, and promised continued government support.

He also revealed he is exploring the possibility of Trinidad and Tobago hosting a future edition of the Games.

« I will be looking into the possibility of Trinidad and Tobago hosting the future edition of the CARIFTA Games, and I intend to meet with the NAAA President, Mr. Serrette, to discuss this matter further and to explore what would be required to make this vision a reality. »

The Minister also conveyed congratulations from Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

« I say to our athletes, thank you for your commitment, your courage, and your excellence. You have given this nation reason to celebrate, and more importantly, reasons to believe. »
