From Gaming To Profession: Esports Gains Ground Locally
4 hours ago
Have you ever considered turning your passion for gaming into a professional career?
In just two decades, Trinidad and Tobago has transformed gaming from a recreational pastime into a formal competitive sport, rising to rank among the world’s top three esports nations.
Teacher and Director of Scholastic Esports, Akil O’Connor, said that anyone can make a living from esports. However, it’s about exploring the opportunities available.
« You may be surprised there may be a competitive community in Candy Crush, and what it comes down to is pushing yourself further, seeing what’s out there, and then with the support of your local esports community, you may find that there are opportunities for you out there that you may not know. »
Expressing hope that competitive gaming will gain wider national recognition, Mr. O’Connor called for greater support from local stakeholders, noting that limited investment has left many unaware of the sector’s potential.
« So by ‘stakeholders’, by extension I also mean Ministry involvement, so because the largest stakeholders don’t know about it, it still remains niche. »
