Tobago’s Independence Observance To Focus on Prayer and Community

In line with the government’s decision to cancel the annual Independence Day Parade and fireworks display, Tobago’s Independence Day observance on Sunday, August 31st, will instead focus on culture, reflection and community.
According to a release from the Office of the Chief Secretary, the programme will be held under the theme “A Day of Prayer, Community and Celebration.”
The day begins with a 5K road race and 10K cycling competition, followed by boat and goat racing at the Scarborough Waterfront. Later, a prayer and worship service will take place at the Shaw Park Complex, followed by a gospel concert at the Scarborough Library Amphitheatre. The observance will close with an Open-Air Movie Night at the Botanical Gardens.
The Assembly says this approach honours the spirit of Independence while creating meaningful, culturally resonant experiences that reflect the needs and aspirations of the nation.
