A symbol and celebration of shared creativity, faith, and community spirit — this is how the Church of the Incarnation in Maloney Gardens describes its newly unveiled wall mural themed « In Our Flesh. »
The mural was a collaborative effort by three artists and members of the Trinidad and Tobago Art Society: Courtney Hernandez, Mario Blades, and Nathan Thompson.
Parish priest Father Kwesi Alleyne said the mural is a work of art that seeks to reflect God “in our flesh.” He hopes this art piece will inspire many throughout the Maloney community.
« So we are hoping that with this mural, it will be a first of such projects where we share beauty in different ways, hopefully others are inspired really to come and have artistic projects and that we can continue this. This place is a place that people walk through everyday the church is really in the heart of the community so we hope that as people pass by, they see themselves reflected and it sort of encourages a celebration of who we are as people. »
Artist Courtney Hernandez said that the mural is an inspiration, a symbol of hope for all in the Jubilee year.
« My hope is that this mural that we call ‘In Our Flesh’ can inspire other communities to spread the word through art for the good of Trinidad and Tobago and, by extension, the whole world for hope and peace. »
One small boy from the audience described what the wall mural meant to him.
« Looking at the painting, Mary is covering Maloney to protect it. »
Vicar General of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Port of Spain, Father Martin Sirju, offered a blessing over the mural and the community, thus marking the occasion with reverence and praise.
The parish, recognising that Republic Day is approaching, hailed the mural as a powerful reminder of unity, creativity, and the importance of working together for the common good of all.
