Uplyft is changing the way this country views mobility, while providing safety, comfort, and independence for its users.

Owned by Trinidadian nationals, the Canadian-based company Access Mobility MedCare recently launched Uplyft, the first seated self-transfer system that requires no external physical force to operate.

Speaking at the unveiling at the Kapok Hotel, founder of the company Neala Persad said it is currently holding talks with stakeholders to ensure the equipment will not only impact the public and private health sectors, but also the wider ageing population within the region.

« I really don’t need the statistics to tell me that when I went to Champs Wellness, and I went to the Princess Elizabeth Home, and I went to the Nursing Facility, and I went to Southern Care Medical, there are people ageing. And even if they are not ageing, they have a challenge. The number will only grow — by our population, how quickly we are growing, and we are growing as a population not only here but in the Caribbean. »

Attendees got an up-close look at how Uplyft operates and learned about the materials behind the design, which can hold up to 500 pounds.

After participating in a live demonstration, one volunteer shared his experience: « Effortless, no discomfort, no pressure. Absolutely safe. »

Palliative care specialist Dr. Chelsea Garcia welcomed the technology, as she highlighted the harsh reality caregivers face when looking after persons with mobility challenges.

« A lot of our caregivers, they are putting strain on their backs. It’s also important to recognise that caregivers represent a huge amount of domestic work. They account for forty percent of GDP, and it’s really an invisible workforce. I don’t know if any of you all are caregivers, but when you have an ageing relative that you are looking after, you can’t perform at work. You can’t go to work. Some people have to leave work to care for their loved ones, and then often, this goes unseen. »

With innovations like Uplyft, Access Mobility MedCare is redefining independence and safety for the ageing population one lift at a time.
