TPP Campaigns on the Platform of "Tobago is We"
In a fiery and impassioned address to supporters at the Montgomery Recreation Ground, Political Leader of the Tobago People’s Party (TPP), Hon. Farley Augustine, has clearly defined the ideological battlefield for the upcoming January 12th election. The rallying cry is simple, yet profound: « Tobago is We. »
Declaring that the upcoming poll is about more than just governance—it is about identity—Augustine outlined a vision of self-determination where Tobagonians are the primary architects of their own destiny.
Defining « Tobago is We »
For the TPP, « Tobago is We » is not a xenophobic slogan, but a declaration of self-reliance and community resilience. Augustine described the true Tobagonian spirit as one of innate strength and communal support.
« The Tobagonians I know are a bunch of resilient people, » Augustine told the crowd. « Even when we fall out yesterday, we still find a way to chuck a piece of pumpkin over the fence. »
He emphasized that this philosophy extends to economic autonomy, asserting that Tobago must have the right to decide its own business partners without needing permission from Trinidad. « This Tobago must be a Tobago where Tobagonians decide for themselves… who we do business with and when we want to do business with them. »
The Fight for Autonomy
The Chief Secretary used the platform to contrast the TPP’s indigenous roots with opponents he described as being controlled from Port of Spain. He argued that true development is impossible when vital decisions—from town and country planning approvals to airport landing rights—are made on another island.
« We don’t need PNM to tell us Tobago first, » Augustine declared. « Tobago was always first for us… It was never first for them. »
He cited practical frustrations, such as the inability to get approvals for buildings « higher than a coconut tree » in 2025, calling it « colonialism 2.0. » The TPP leader promised that a victory on January 12th would be the catalyst for a renewed and aggressive push for the autonomy bill in Parliament by January 19th.
A Slate of « We »
To carry this banner, the TPP introduced a mix of seasoned leadership and new blood, positioning them as the embodiment of the « Tobago is We » spirit.
Augustine urged the electorate to reject the « rah rah » of the opposition and secure their own future. « We don’t need no external affirmations… We know that to be true to ourselves. Because at the end of the day, Tobago is We. »
