eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has delivered the State of the City address to just a handful of councillors. The IFP and EFF councillors boycotted the event, saying they did not want to participate in a whitewashed address that ignores issues plaguing the city council. The net appears to be closing in on members of the underworld and those suspected of being involved in organised crime. Two major criminal trials involving Nafiz Modack and 13 others and Mark Lifman, Jerome Booysen and 12 others are underway in separate courtrooms in the Western Cape High Court. Ralph and Nicole Stanfield have also been arrested and are currently in custody awaiting trial. On the weekend Ralph’s brother, Kyle was arrested in an upmarket Cape Town Suburb. Close to five million rand in cash,16 Rolex watches and a 9mm pistol were found in the home. eNCA's Ayesha Ismail reports police are not ruling out more arrests in connection with this case. Food insecurity is fast becoming a reality and white maize prices are now expected to increase. This as the country is experiencing drought conditions brought on by the El Niño phenomenon. The Gauteng Health Department says it’s finalising the process of hiring private providers of radiation treatment for 3,000 cancer patients. Last year, R784-million was allocated to deal with this waiting list but not one patient on the list has been treated so far. Instead, the Treatment Action Campaign, Cancer Alliance, and Section 27 say the department has cut communication with them over the matter. South Africa's journey to democracy was a long struggle taken up by citizens and foreigners alike. Many laid down their lives to help achieve freedom from the chains of apartheid and discrimination. Some of these heroes and heroines have been recognised with National Orders, bestowed by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria and most of those on the 2024 honours list, were anti-apartheid activists. eNCA reporter Pule Letshwiti-Jones was there. Township and rural women and youth are calling for more financial and other support to help start or maintain their already-existing businesses. Limited financial resources, irregular water and electricity supply and crime - are some of the major challenges facing those running businesses in these areas. Women and youth make up the largest percentage of voters registered for the 29 May polls, yet they are under-represented in many areas of governance and economy. eNCA’s Siphamandla Goge took to Melmoth, northern KwaZulu-Natal and filed this report. Anglo has had significant internal operational issues over the past six months and announced plans to retrench about 3,700 workers.
