The Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries is assuring the public that there has been no increase in cases of bat biting or rabies in Trinidad and Tobago.

This comes in response to reports from farmers who raised the issue this week.

In a release, the Ministry said that while vampire bats can occasionally affect livestock in rural communities, all suspected cases of rabies are promptly investigated and treated.

Veterinary officers continue to monitor the national rabies status and provide treatment and vaccinations where necessary.

The Ministry says its Anti-Rabies Unit works closely with farmers and animal owners, offering advice on bat-proofing, trapping, and the safe removal of bats, as well as carrying out vaccination drives within a 10-kilometre radius of any reported case.

Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report unusual behaviour in animals or signs of bat bites to the nearest County Veterinary Office.
