Dr Faith Brebnor, Deputy Political Leader of the Tobago People’s Party (TPP), has utilised a striking physiological metaphor to underscore the critical importance of Tobago’s development to the wider nation. Addressing supporters on a TPP platform just days before the Monday, January 12 elections, Brebnor recounted a recent radio interview on a Trinidad station where she was challenged to explain why the island’s progress should be a national priority.

Brebnor likened Tobago to a « little toe », arguing that just as an injury to a small appendage causes pain to radiate through the entire body, the stagnation of Tobago negatively impacts the entire twin-island republic. « If your little toe is hurting, your whole body is hurting… the squeeze from the little toe affects the entire being, » she stated, emphasising that true national stability cannot be achieved if one island is left behind.

Consequently, the Secretary of Health, Wellness and Social Protection asserted that developing Tobago must be viewed as a priority for both Trinidad and Tobago, rather than a niche concern. She used this rationale to issue a direct appeal to Tobagonians currently residing in Trinidad, urging them to return home to cast their ballots. Dr Brebnor stressed that their presence on January 12 is vital to securing the development that the island—and by extension, the country—requires.
