Des Vignes: Educator Mom Target of Spite
In an emotional address at a People’s National Movement (PNM) meeting in Mason Hall, Kwesi Des Vignes alleged that political victimization by the current administration has extended to his ailing mother, a retired educator. With the Tobago House of Assembly election approaching on January 12, Des Vignes claimed that « wickedness » and « spite » have endangered the life of a woman who dedicated her career to teaching the island’s youth.
Des Vignes highlighted his mother’s contributions to Tobago, noting she taught at Mason Hall, Buccoo, and Scarborough Secondary schools. He recounted a distressing incident last year when she required urgent heart surgery. According to Des Vignes, a doctor initially advised him to seek available state assistance. However, he alleged that once officials realized the patient was « Mrs. Des Vignes, » the support was abruptly withdrawn. « By the following evening, all of a sudden they don’t know if they could help, » he told supporters, asserting she received « not a cent » due to her name.
The speech also detailed wider allegations of nepotistic victimization. Des Vignes stated that immediately after the administration took office, his sisters, brother, and sister-in-law were fired, despite their qualifications. He framed these actions as part of a broader pattern of targeting families opposed to the ruling party.
Des Vignes urged the electorate to use the January 12 poll to reject this brand of politics. He declared that the PNM is returning to fight for every family he claims has been destroyed by the current regime. « On January the 12th, we coming back for them, » he vowed, rallying the crowd in Mason Hall.
