Political Leader of the Tobago People’s Party (TPP), Farley Augustine, has strongly defended his administration’s family support initiatives against recent criticism. Speaking at a political meeting in Tobago, the Chief Secretary addressed those he claimed were trying to « make a mockery » of the financial assistance the party intends to provide to families.

Augustine emphasized the party’s comprehensive commitment to the population, declaring that the TPP is interested in the care of all citizens from « conception all the way to your expiration ». He framed this approach as a lifelong responsibility, stating that the party takes « responsibility for your well-being » from the womb to the grave.

Directly addressing the controversy surrounding a specific financial figure, Augustine noted that critics have focused on the sum of $500 to disparage the initiative. He clarified that the administration never proposed that « $500 can mind child » in its entirety. Instead, Augustine explained that the financial support is intended to be part of a broader « suite » and « package of incentives » designed to assist families, rather than a sole source of funding for raising a child.

The TPP leader reiterated that the intention of these policies is to provide tangible support for every family in Tobago. He dismissed the mockery as a misunderstanding of the program’s scope, insisting that the party’s goal is to provide a safety net that covers citizens at every stage of life.
