In a rousing address to supporters in Buccoo ahead of Monday’s polls, Tobago People’s Party (TPP) Political Leader Farley Augustine moved to quell fears regarding the future of local businesses operating in the popular « No Man’s Land » area. Addressing the crowd, Augustine categorically denied claims that the administration intends to displace local vendors, asserting instead that the goal is to elevate the standard of operations to meet international best practices.
Augustine explained that the recent changes, which involved the removal of « shanty town » structures, were necessary to ensure the safety and sustainability of the tourism product. He warned that subpar food preparation facilities could lead to food poisoning and lawsuits, which would damage the destination’s reputation and create legal liability for operators. To counter this, the administration has replaced makeshift structures with dignified tents and tables, allowing vendors to sell their goods in a cleaner, more professional environment on the waterfront.
The Chief Secretary highlighted the creativity of young entrepreneurs in the area, specifically praising the new « tiki crafts » and the resilience of the glass-bottom boat operators. He framed these upgrades as part of a broader « Tobago First » philosophy, ensuring that development benefits all Tobagonians—from the « Rasta man » to the youth—rather than displacing them for outsiders. Augustine promised that under the TPP, the people of Tobago will always be prioritized, with a focus on helping them earn with dignity and pride.
