Tobago People’s Party leader Farley Augustine has outlined a robust vision for sustainable tourism while firmly dismissing rumors regarding the privatization of popular tourist sites. Speaking in Buccoo ahead of the upcoming THA polls, Augustine identified sustainable tourism as the island’s natural competitive advantage.
The administration has set ambitious targets, aiming for a 6% economic contribution from the tourism sector by 2030 and a 25% increase in long-stay visitor arrivals by 2035. Achieving this, Augustine noted, requires significant improvements in luxury accommodation, transportation connectivity, and destination marketing.
A central focus of the address was the iconic Buccoo Marine Park and « No Man’s Land ». Augustine categorically denied allegations that the area would be sold or that local vendors would be evicted. He described these claims as fabrications intended to mislead the public.
Clarifying the administration’s stance, Augustine proposed a partnership with existing vendors to upgrade the facility. He highlighted current sanitary deficiencies, such as the lack of restrooms and fresh water, as unsustainable for a premier tourist attraction. The proposed plan involves constructing environmentally sound facilities, which would be provided to vendors cost-free, provided they maintain them.
Augustine emphasized that the land surrounding the marine park, previously held by a private company, would be vested in the Tobago House of Assembly to remain the property of the people of Tobago. He also stressed the importance of safety and regulation, citing past litigation involving water sports accidents, and urged vendors to adhere to strict health and safety standards to protect the destination’s reputation.
