Farley Threatens to Evict Licensing
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine has issued a thunderous ultimatum to the Licensing Department, threatening to evict the agency from its Tobago headquarters if it continues what he describes as a « punitive » campaign against the island’s motorists. Speaking on a Tobago People’s Party (TPP) platform ahead of Monday’s election, Augustine warned that the building housing the department is the property of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) and can be reclaimed at any moment.
Augustine directed a fierce line of questioning toward Minority Leader Kelvon Hislop, demanding to know why he remained silent when the Transport Commissioner « showed up by the house of Trevor James » to investigate private vehicles. The Chief Secretary blasted the opposition for colluding with the Public Service Commission (PSC) to undermine the administration, vehemently denying any impropriety in how his team acquires vehicles. « We don’t thief cars in this administration, » Augustine declared, asserting that they use legitimate bank loans and personal funds, not corrupt means.
Turning his focus to the Licensing Department, Augustine reminded the Central Government that they are essentially guests in a THA facility. He stated that if the department insists on using its power to « punish Tobagonians » rather than manage traffic and road safety, he will not hesitate to shut the building down.
« Let them go out and stand up in the sun, » Augustine threatened, making it clear that the THA will not subsidise an agency that he views as hostile to the local population. He vowed to use the full weight of his office to protect the people of Tobago, regardless of how the Central Government feels about it.
