Curtis Douglas, president of the All Tobago Fisherfolk Association, is raising alarm over the worsening situation facing Tobago’s fishing industry. He says illegal fishing by foreign vessels is threatening the livelihood of local fisherfolk and the island’s food security.

Douglas is calling for urgent government intervention and a meeting with the Prime Minister to address the issue and protect Tobago’s marine resources.

Reports indicate that foreign vessels — particularly from Barbados and Venezuela — have been entering Tobago’s waters and engaging in illegal fishing activities, sometimes as close as five miles from shore.

Local fisherfolk say the problem has persisted for years and that stronger enforcement and regional cooperation are needed to protect the industry.
