As we continue to shine a light on influential women in Trinidad and Tobago, we hear from Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam who shared that she is focused on entrepreneurial pursuits.

Speaking in an interview on Talkcity 91.1 FM, the former Miss Universe highlighted the significant growth of the region’s entertainment industry but said it still lacks a strong commercial framework.

She praised several artists who are helping to guide the next generation of performers.

« I think our music is in great hands, and we produce amazing content here. But we do not commercialise it. When it is commercialised, the monies go to somebody else. »

Ms. Fitzwilliam added that the Caribbean has consistently produced world-class talent across sports and the arts, but greater support systems are needed to help that talent thrive globally.

« These little islands have produced Garfield Sobers, Brian Lara, Dwayne Bravo. Gems. Michael Holding out of Jamaica with that fantastic voice. In the arts, there are so many of us on Broadway, Heather Headley with her phenomenal voice and acting chops. We need to create an environment where we can push our content out to the world from here. »

She said nurturing these aspects of the creative sector will be key to ensuring its continued growth.
