Creating greater public awareness of artificial intelligence and digital tools is among the goals of the Ministry of Public Administration and Artificial Intelligence.

Speaking to the media at the Open House Career Fair in commemoration of Public Service Week, Minister Dominic Smith said increasing public awareness will be key to the successful adoption of AI and other digital services across Government Ministries.

While acknowledging that some citizens may be hesitant to embrace new technology, he believes greater understanding of the benefits these services offer will encourage wider acceptance.

« People have not been very aware of the services that are available to them, so the first stage for the government and for the Cabinet and for ministries is to really make citizens and the public sector aware of the many provisions that are provided. Naturally, there is anxiety surrounding technology in general, but once there is a consistent workflow and people understand what is the benefit to them and their lives and their families, I think the adoption rate will be a lot more expansive. »

Members of the public attending the Open House expressed cautious optimism about the growing role of artificial intelligence in government services.

Attendee Maria Reverand said while she has reservations about AI, she was encouraged by the focus on promoting its responsible use.

« I’m kind of anti AI, but I’m kind of looking to see how they approach it. I like the idea that the goal is to create the responsible use of it. »

Another attendee, Samantha Slandy, believes embracing the technology is important.

« I don’t know how it is being implemented in the Ministries so far, but I think with how it’s going, I think it is important to keep up with that. I think it’s a great initiative for us to keep up with the world and the Caribbean. »

Minister Smith is confident that as technology evolves, more citizens will be encouraged to engage with and benefit from government digital services.
