More than 90,000 public servants are working daily to keep Trinidad and Tobago running, delivering essential services across healthcare, education, national security, and technology.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Artificial Intelligence joined the international community in observing United Nations Public Service Day and Public Service Week, recognising the dedication and contributions of these workers.

Speaking at his Ministry’s Career Fair on Tuesday, which showcased more than 40 Ministries, departments and agencies, Minister of Public Administration and Artificial Intelligence Dominic Smith commended the commitment and professionalism of public servants.

He pointed out that these workers continue to play a critical role in driving Trinidad and Tobago’s development and delivering essential services to citizens.

« Public Service Day is an opportunity to reflect on the dedication, resilience and professionalism of thousands of public officers who work tirelessly every day in service to our nation. I think the number is about 90,000-plus public servants that get up every day and hopefully come to work on time towards building a stronger nation. And this happens in healthcare, in education, national security, social services, infrastructure, finance, technology, administration. »

The Tobago House of Assembly was also represented at the event.

Director of Youth Development at the THA, AnnMarie deGazon, said Public Service Week is a chance to recognise all public servants, especially those whose efforts often go unnoticed.

« All of the persons that you will interact with behind the booth are all public servants, and so each year we also recognise them in Tobago. This year we’re focusing particularly on our daily-paid officers, the ones who normally work in the trenches that we don’t normally see. Those who you know clean the roads and all of that. »

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Eli Zakour, said the event also highlighted the evolution of Government services, particularly the growing use of digital technology to improve efficiency and convenience.

« Many things stood out today. The hard-working public officers and the knowledge of the services being provided. That stood out for me and how the diversification of many of the Ministries now including the digitisation as mentioned. In the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation now you could get your certified copies online, renew your driver’s permit online even if it expired under five years, and you can now pay fixed penalty notices also online now. »

As Public Service Week continues, Minister Smith is encouraging citizens to engage with Government agencies and learn more about available services, while recognising the contributions of public servants who help keep the nation running every day.
