Minister of Labour, Small and Micro Enterprise Development, Leroy Baptiste, is assuring that Government is actively working to create more sustainable and decent employment opportunities for citizens across the country.
He made the comment while addressing the Pilot Entrepreneurial Training Programme for the Blind and Visually Impaired on Monday.
« We cannot continue supporting the exploitation of persons with these make-work programmes, where you work for 10 days and then you have to fight up, hope someone calls you again. We are trying to bring about decent jobs. That’s the mandate of the International Labour Organization, which we have embraced as our mandate as a Government. »
The words of Minister of Labour, Small and Micro Enterprise Development, Leroy Baptiste, who says creating decent jobs for citizens is a top priority for the Government.
Minister Baptiste said the employment rate is « holding steady, » noting that thousands of persons have received jobs since the Government took office.
« We have, in fact, by employment through the various Ministries, close to 15,000 jobs would have been added just from Government employment, and then you have other persons in the private sector who would have been employing persons. So that, yes, it is holding steady because we are working towards it. »
Minister Baptiste also emphasised that persons with disabilities are not excluded from employment opportunities.
« You go into a place like the Water and Sewerage Authority, you’ll see several persons with disabilities gainfully employed within that environment. And I’m sure it’s all over the Government service. There are persons employed with disabilities. »
The Minister made the remarks at the Pilot Entrepreneurial Training Programme for the Blind and Visually Impaired on Monday.
