A recent media release from the office of Barry Padarath has sparked debate over the government’s approach to tackling drug trafficking and crime in Trinidad and Tobago. The release, titled “Strong, Decisive Leadership from Prime Minister,” praises the current administration’s “strategic and timely intervention” alongside the United States to address the drug trade.
However, it also critically addresses the previous administration’s perceived failure to act, accusing them of turning a “blind eye” to the issue and allowing Trinidad and Tobago to become a major transshipment point for international traffickers, The document highlights a staggering increase in murder rates since 2018, linking the violence directly to the drug trade, turf wars, and gang conflicts. It asserts that the former opposition leader’s condemnation of the current government is “nothing but lip service and platitudes .” The release concludes by urging citizens to support the Prime Minister’s strong, courageous, and unafraid” leadership in confronting the criminal networks that have plagued the nation for decades.
