HOUSE SPEAKER PREVIEWS TUESDAY’S PARLIAMENT CEREMONY
8 hours ago
The Speaker of the House of Assembly addressed the media outside parliament Friday, offering insights into the official swearing-in of elected parliamentarians scheduled for next Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
The speaker also weighed in on the contentious issue of the Deputy Speakership.
The appointment mechanism for the role is currently the subject of a legal challenge brought by the leader of the opposition.
The challenge contests a recent constitutional amendment by the incumbent administration that allows the deputy speaker to be selected from outside the ranks of elected members of parliament.
The government’s rationale for the change is to prevent the possibility of a long-term vacancy in the post—a situation previously experienced during the tenure of the former Prime Minister, Micoud South MP, Allen Chastanet.
Prime minister Philip J. Pierre has confirmed that his administration will defer any action on the appointment until the court delivers its decision on the legality of the constitutional amendment.
The House Speaker explained the first order of business on Tuesday.
