In Part 3 of Living in Shacks: The Downtown Kingston Story, host Kelisha Williams examines the history behind the city’s deteriorating housing stock and the communities that were transformed by decades of violence.
The documentary looks at the impact of political warfare between 1976 and 1980, when thousands of people were displaced from downtown Kingston and homes and businesses were destroyed.
Residents and community voices describe how violence changed the way people viewed their homes and communities, with many families leaving Jamaica or abandoning properties they could no longer safely occupy.
The programme also explores how abandoned properties, overcrowding and squatting contributed to the continuing housing crisis, while experts question whether enough has been done to enforce regulations and properly redevelop downtown Kingston.
Urban planners and other experts argue that Jamaica has the trained professionals and capacity to address the redevelopment challenge but the question remains how and when meaningful transformation will happen.
