There was uproar at the monthly meeting of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation on Tuesday after Councillor for the Springfield Division, Lorraine Dobson, was appointed Deputy Mayor.

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillors walked out in protest, citing the Representation of the People Act (ROPA), which states that when there is a tie in the mayoral selection, the mayor should be chosen from the party with the popular vote and the deputy from the other party.

The JLP stressed that the mayor is already a member of the People’s National Party (PNP). Councillor for the Gordon Town Division, Neville Whittaker, said he is baffled by the move.
