The Judges’ Swearing-in Ceremony for the Michaelmas Term marks an important tradition in Jamaica’s judicial calendar, where newly appointed and returning judges take the oath of office as they prepare to serve in the nation’s courts.

The Michaelmas Term, one of the four traditional legal terms inherited from the British judicial system, runs from October to December and signals the formal opening of the courts after the long recess. Rooted in centuries of legal tradition, the Michaelmas Term continues to play a vital role in the administration of justice across the Commonwealth, including Jamaica.

This ceremony not only underscores the importance of the independence of the judiciary, but also highlights the ongoing commitment of judges to uphold the rule of law, protect citizens’ rights, and ensure fair and transparent justice for all.
