Residents of Lambeau and surrounding communities now have a modern bus shed facility to call their own.
Coined as a Smart Bus Shed, the space was upgraded by the Lambeau Credit Union as part of the Tobago House of Assembly’s Adopt-a-Bus-Shed Initiative. The facility was officially commissioned on Friday.
The revamped bus shed includes free Wi‑Fi with safety precautions and charging stations for commuters. This upgrade was made possible through the work of the Lambeau Credit Union.
Credit Union President Nigel Duke said the outfitting of the bus shed is more than a marketing initiative.
« As a cooperative rooted in service to the people, we believe that even small steps, when taken with purpose, can help create a more connected, inclusive community. By expanding access to digital connectivity, we hope to support students, families, and community members who rely on reliable internet access for learning, communication, and everyday life. »
Lambeau/Lowlands Area Representative Wane Clarke thanked the credit union for their investment, noting the project highlights the importance of strong private-public partnerships.
« I think the true strength in any society, by extension country, is when the private and public could work together. When we have proper collaboration, we could move mountains. Until you come together, until you start working together, sometimes you can never realise how much strength there is in working together. »
Secretary of Public Infrastructure and Transportation Nathisha Charles-Pantin also noted that the renovation of the bus shed proves that all can play a part in improving public spaces. She said the Division will be extending the initiative.
« I want to say to the residents of North and East Tobago, you are not forgotten. We hear you. We see you, and we are committed to expanding this programme further across the island so that more communities can benefit from improved and upgraded spaces like this one. But even beyond bus sheds, the Division continues to think about how partnerships like these can improve other public spaces across Tobago. We are already exploring ways to replicate the success of this programme in the development and revitalisation of green spaces across the island. »
Secretary Charles-Pantin also called on Tobagonians to treat the upgraded space with care and respect so it can continue to serve commuters and remain an attractive feature for visitors to the island.
