Thousands of citizens across Trinidad and Tobago will benefit from two new Mobile Legal Aid Clinics.
This is as the Legal Aid and Advisory Authority is expanding its services to meet increasing demand.
The units were launched on Friday at the Authority’s Head Office in Port of Spain and will visit communities across the country – the first stop is Cedros.
Minister of Justice and Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General Devesh Maharaj noted that there is an increasing demand for legal aid services in Trinidad and Tobago.
He said the launch of the units is important as the Authority’s legal services become more accessible to the people who need them most.
« Over the years the Authority has expanded its reach significantly, from visiting small locations at various community centres, with only a table to provide legal assistance, to establishing this head office and various sub-offices across the country. Today, the public can access services through offices located in Port of Spain, Arima, Chaguanas, San Fernando, and Tobago. »
Minister Maharaj explained that the service of the Authority will be taken into communities across both islands.
He said in 2025, thousands of citizens benefited from the Authority’s Outreach Programme.
« Over the last year it participated in some 32 outreach activities, reaching an estimated 3,115 persons across Trinidad and Tobago. »
According to the Minister, despite this, there are still thousands of citizens who face challenges in accessing legal services.
« For some individuals, travelling to an office can involve long commutes, transportation costs, or logistical challenges that make seeking legal advice difficult. Recognising these challenges, the Legal Aid and Advisory Committee conceptualised a solution, bringing the offices directly to the people. »
Meanwhile, Director and Chairman of the Legal Aid and Advisory Authority Renuka Rambhajan welcomed the new mobile units, saying that in the next two weeks their full schedules will be published on the Authority’s website and on social media.
