MADURO QUESTIONS PERSAD BISSESSAR'S US SUPPORT

Tensions are heating up between Trinidad and Tobago and its closest neighbour, Venezuela. President Nicolás Maduro has launched an attack on Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar over her support for a US military presence in the southern Caribbean. During a media conference carried live on Telesur English’s Facebook page earlier today, Maduro questioned the reason for Persad-Bissessar’s US support. Maduro reflected on the shared history between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela, noting that there was a time when both nations functioned as one community. Venezuela has cautioned that it would retaliate if Trinidad and Tobago’s territory were ever used as a base for US military action against them.
