Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander has delivered a strong warning to individuals in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the 5th Annual Meeting of States on the Caribbean Firearms Roadmap, held at the Hilton in Port of Spain, Minister Alexander emphasised that authorities are intensifying their efforts to curb gun-related crime and other related illicit activities.
« And I am telling you today, when the region stands together, a transformation will happen – that transformation that crime cannot stand against. »
Minister Alexander also sent a message to criminals that their days are numbered, as authorities continue to take action. He issued a stern warning to individuals who possess illegal firearms and ammunition.
« My advice is simple: I can tell you drop them off at the nearest police station, I can tell you you could rest it down at your feet, I can tell you you can guide police officers where to find them. That is on you. Do not wait for us to come to find it because we are coming. »
United Nations Resident Coordinator Joanna Kazana commended the strides being made by the Minister of Homeland Security and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in addressing crime and violence across communities nationwide.
« Minister, please be assured that this government’s emphasis on rebuilding public trust, on strengthening State institutions, and empowering communities closely mirrors the United Nations’ core commitment to leaving no one behind, particularly those who are most vulnerable. »
Executive Director of the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), Lieutenant Colonel Michael Jones, revealed that the agency has conducted hundreds of assessments and successfully destroyed more than three million rounds of ammunition.
« The programme has helped curb the diversion of firearms and ammunition into the hands of criminals and gangs, minimising the risk of unplanned explosions, and assists States in implementing UN obligations. »
Following the opening ceremony, various key stakeholders, strategic partners, and heads of agencies held a follow-up forum, continuing crucial discussions.
