Trinidad and Tobago has, for the first time in a decade, moved out of the list of the world’s ten most violent nations.
Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander highlighted the shift during the Police Passing Out Parade on Monday.
As he addressed those gathered to see the new officers perform drills that signify their competence, the Minister spoke about how 4,494 crimes have been tackled.
« One in every three of those crimes was solved. In just five months, 33% of reported crimes was detected. This means more offenders being held accountable, more cases being closed, and more justice for victims and their families. »
He said the murder toll had become lower this year.
« The murder rate is down, as compared to the last 10 years. Firearm seizures are up due to the use of intelligence and strong operation. Detection rates for serious crimes are rising and, in August, Trinidad and Tobago recorded its lowest murder toll in 10 years. »
Minister Alexander said these figures reflect lives saved and the growth of hope in communities for a true change in criminality in the nation.
