Minister of Public Administration and Artificial Intelligence, Dominic Smith, says the vision of his Ministry is centred on putting people first.

He said that there is a need to identify common “pain points” for citizens, adding that their approach would entail enacting measures based on stakeholder feedback.

Speaking on the linkage between public administration and artificial intelligence, Minister Smith noted that there are challenges to the ease and efficiency of accessing public services.

He referred to the use of AI within the digital transformation agenda as a “game changer” for nations when implemented correctly.

« The Artificial Intelligence component will be an enabler. And what does it do? It sort of, augments what we call the human intelligence component and the machine learning component. »

Minister Smith said that leveraging AI would ultimately cut costs to the government and the public purse.

He added that his Ministry has researched the models of developed countries, including Singapore, Estonia and India, to potentially replicate their success as a Caribbean nation.

« We are actually the first Ministry in the Caribbean that has identified artificial intelligence as a means of change and an amplification of the technology that we’ve been working on. »

While noting the importance of his Ministry’s ability to generate revenue, Minister Smith emphasised the need to utilise the assets already available more efficiently to the benefit of citizens.
