The long-awaited agro-processing facility is set to come on stream soon, according to Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ravi Ratiram.
Minister Ratiram said the outfitting of the agro-processing facility is now in progress and will provide farmers with expanded opportunities for packaging and value-added processing of their produce.
« I’m happy to announce that within a few days from now, within the coming weeks, we are going to be launching and recommissioning the Namdevco Packing House, which is going to be known as the agro-processing centre of Trinidad and Tobago. Very soon, we are going to be opening that. You all know that we would have gotten an agro-processing facility from the Prime Minister of India valued at about US$1 million. »
The Minister added that operational changes are also coming for the Piarco Packing House.
He said plans are underway to significantly expand its operating schedule in order to better serve farmers and exporters.
« The only packing house that was operating would have been the Piarco Packing House, operating from 8 to 4, Monday to Friday. I have good news that before Cabinet, there is a note at this point in time where we are looking at expanding the operations of the Piarco packing house, that is soon going to be operating seven days a week, 24 hours a day. »
