New Radar for Tobago to Combat Daily Aerial Smuggling; Minister Denies Military Launchpad Rumors
2 hours ago
At a recent press conference, the Minister of Defence addressed concerns regarding national security infrastructure in Tobago, explicitly clarifying that the Crown Point airport is not serving as a launchpad for military operations.
To quell rumors of a local military build-up, the Minister pointed to the nearby presence of the USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier in the Atlantic. He stated that the massive U.S. vessel handles necessary military functions, ensuring there is « no need » for Tobago to be used for such operations.
The primary focus of the address was the installation of new radar equipment in Tobago. The Minister acknowledged issues with existing systems and emphasized that the upgrade is crucial for strengthening national capabilities against severe criminal threats.
The new radar is specifically aimed at counter-trafficking efforts. The Minister revealed alarming intelligence regarding « almost daily » illegal flights—including the use of drones—delivering drugs, arms, and ammunition from the mainland. Traffickers have reportedly shifted to aerial routes to avoid detection at sea. The Minister also noted that human trafficking is becoming an increasing concern on the island.
