PM Persad Bissessar The Anchor Did Hold!

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has publicly embraced the « Blue Wave » in Tobago, joining Chief Secretary Farley Augustine at James Park to celebrate the Tobago People’s Party (TPP) historic 15-0 victory in the Tobago House of Assembly elections. Speaking to a jubilant crowd following the swearing-in of Assembly members last Thursday, the Prime Minister declared that her prayers had been answered, referencing her previous address at the same location where she hoped « the anchor holds. »
The Prime Minister’s presence marked a significant moment of political unity between the central government and the THA. She revealed that she had closely followed Augustine’s campaign trail, noting that « everywhere was blue, I was there with you. » In a spirited response to campaign banter regarding party colours and metaphors, Mrs Persad-Bissessar addressed Augustine’s « roast breadfruit » remarks. She playfully corrected the analogy, asserting that the « yellow » in Trinidad is « butter yellow »—symbolising the United National Congress—while affirming that Tobago is undeniably « blue, blue, blue. » She harmonised the two, stating, « The sky is blue and the sun is shining, » signalling a cooperative future between the two islands.
Beyond the celebrations, the Prime Minister was committing to immediate legislative action. She was announcing that the central government, under Augustine’s direction and guidance, would be beginning the process of granting Tobago greater autonomy as early as last Friday. Mrs Persad-Bissessar emphasised that this legislative push for self-determination was only possible because the electorate gave the TPP a clean sweep of all 15 seats, solidifying their mandate.
The event concluded with the Prime Minister reiterating her support for the new administration, promising to work closely with « Farley and his team » to ensure the anchor continues to hold until the next election.
