Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her delegation have departed New York City for Washington, DC, where they are scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on Tuesday.

Speaking en route to DC, she said there are several matters up for discussion.

« When we get there, several areas of mutual interest to be discussed. Chief among those that have to do with national security and safety. That’s priority one on our discussion list. Thereafter, energy security is vital to us as well, with respect to hydrocarbon resources that lie in our waters. We have also secured Minister Sobers a meeting with the United States Trade Representative Office, in addition to Secretary Rubio, the trade aspect of it, where we want to discuss the tariffs to see how best we can make that work for us. »

The Prime Minister underscored the strategic importance of the upcoming meetings, describing this trip as particularly significant.

« I have been here before, but this visit is even more important than previous Washington visits given our thrust towards economic security, energy security, national security, of course, and of course the strategic importance of our hydrocarbon resources. So we look forward, all of us, as we journey. »

Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Sean Sobers, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Barry Padarath, and Minister of Legal Affairs, Saddam Hosein, are among the delegation heading to Washington.
